>> reporter: good morning i'm amy hollyfield live in oakland. protester are on the move. they are marching through the streets right now. they are headed to the port of oakland which they hope to shutdown. plus, all night effort to cleanup a massive diesel fuel spill that has shutdown one building at cal and leaks to san francisco bay. south bay military troop support group becomes the latest victim of the growing scanner scam that has hit 24 bay area lucky stores and more than 500 customers. >> good morning. temperatures in the 40s not as chilly out there. we have scattered showers around the bay. >> problems starting to build up for drivers first stall at bay bridge toll tow truck

injury crash in benicia. i'll have details on that as well. waking up to just a little bit of rain we had overnight. we'll hear more about that later on. 6:01 on this back to work monday i'm eric thomas. and i'm kristen sze. protesters are doesn'ting on pores up and down the -- are descending up on s up and down the west coast. -- [ unintelligible ] >> reporter: they are here and on the move. look at the crowd behind me marching throughout the streets of oakland right now. police are shutting down intersections for them on the way. we saw three busloads of officers moving into place all indications are that everyone thinks this is going to be huge. they expect it to last all day. protesters have been shouting whose port? our port.

they are not deterred by any opposition union leaders even the mayor of oakland has said please don't do this you are only hurting the working-class. protesters say they are going after the top 1% that get rich from the business at the port. they say today is about showing how much power protesters have. >> most of the ports, as i understand it are run by goldman sachs and that's part of why we are doing this. in solidarity with the long shoremen and union workers and part of why we are shutting down the port is just to show that we can. >> reporter: when i asked them about the success they are expecting today they say just look at last month's protest. they managed to shutdown the port for about six hours. they believe they will be able to do it again today. they are marching to the port of oakland the fifth busiest in the country this is part of a bigger picture.

protesters up and down the west coast hope to shutdown ports from southern california to alaska. they say the shutdown from last month in oakland is the model for all of the protesters today. yes, there have been calls from the mayor, union leaders to not do this as you can see clearly today they are not listening to those pleas. they are moving for with their plan. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. 6:03. occupy san francisco member are back in front of a market street address this morning but missing their tents and may not be staying there long. early yesterday police took down the encampment in front of the federal reserve bill , 55 people were arrested -- and booked and released. by noon yesterday many were back without tents. demonstrators are vowing to keep coming back. right now crews from at least five agencies are rushing to try to reopen a building on the uc berkeley

campus before students begin arriving for finals set to start hours from now. the building was closed after a massive diesel spill fuel that has now reached to the bay. katie marzullo joins us live from stanley hall with the latest. >> reporter: i was bad timing. maybe some good news now. take a look at the scene behind us, the pumps operating to clean out the basement have been turned off just within the last 30, 40 minutes it seems like the cleanup efforts are winding down, maybe we are in the final phase. which does mean stanley hall can reopen and the sign posted in front of the building on the front door does read stanley hall will reopen 7:30 a.m. monday morning. it was saturday evening that a campus -- campus police officer noticed the spill, 1700 gallons of diesel fuel had spilled from the

generator. the hall was evacuated, closed down and that left a lot of students nervous about what would happen with their finals starting today. >> it is in the morning like 8 to 10, hopefully they have it cleaned up by tuesday morning, right. i know diesel leaks are dangerous. >> reporter: there are environmental concerns as well. some of the diesel we are told a small amount did leak into strawberry creek a smaller amount into san francisco bay. no matter how small the amount it is always a concern. officials believe wildlife are okay that they've not been affected there are booms and other absorb material in the water to collect as much diesel as possible but it is early so officials are going to keep a close eye on wildlife and make sure they continue to be unharmed. just in the last second we've heard maybe a pump fired back

up. we will continue to monitor it. it does appear the building will reopen for finals week, 7:30 this morning. katie marzullo, abc7 news. 6:06 now. the u.s. coast guard has spent the night trying to contain an oil spill from a sinking ship near richmond. the decommissioned navy tug was reported to be sinking and leaking black oil into the water yesterday. coast guard thinks at least 300 gallons have leaked out they have most of it contained. they placed a boom around brooks island as a precaution. the tug has been privately owned for a decade, no word on what is causing it to sink. the card theft scam that has affected uns of lucky shoppers has hit our nation's -- troops. organizers for blue star say the scammers have stolen at least $3,000 from their account that money was donated to send holiday care packages and help homeless vets.

it may cost them some of the their current supporters. their goal, shutdown the port of oakland and every other port on the west coast. amy hollyfield is live at the port. what about outside support, are they getting much? >> reporter: no, but they don't care. look what they are doing at 7th street. they just got here i asked the police officers what kind of an impact are they having? the officer snapped at me and said we are trying to work out a plan now. this situation is fluid. all the way down the block you can see a huge group of protesters have stopped right here at the entrance of the port they are working on shutting this place down. there are busloads of officers here. we've seen some of them inside -- inside vans with riot helmets on. they are just here on the street watching the situation they have shutdown this intersection all but for one lane. they are working on their

plan. the goal of the protesters is shutdown this port. they marched from the west oakland bart station. they started marching 5:30 this morning. i took them 30 minutes to get here. -- it took them 30 minutes to get here. check out the number of people who showed up even though they were asked not to do this by union leaders, the mayor of oakland and some in the occupy movement who say this will hurt working-class people but the protesters say they are not deterred they are here to hurt the 1% who they say get rich off the -- off of the business here at the port and against those who try to bust up the union. >> the union workers, as i understand they are under contract to -- there's some legality issues, a lot of union members are also occupiers. and they are also being told not to cross the picket line. that's what we are going to

do. >> reporter: this morning they got an early start 5:00 they start add arriving at bart station. they were un-- started arriving at the bar station. they were unloading hundreds of signs, it took 30 minutes for all of them to march here. i want to show you a live picture, look at all the troubles that that are just stopped. bile appearances, business -- by all appearances business has been slowed, if not shutdown entirely. these trucks are barely moving. one lane of traffic left open at this busy intersection we've seen some trucks getting by these trucks trying to get in here to the port are not moving. protest are already having an impact here they say they are going to be here all day this is part of a bigger plan. the goal is to shutdown pores up and down the west coast from southern california to alaska. by all appearances the plan is underway. live in oakland,

amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> we'll continue to check back with you, thank you. card theft scam that has affected 500 lucky supermarket shoppers has hit our nation's troops. organizers with the blue star moms who send care packages to troops say the scammers have stolen at least $3,000 from their account money donated to send holiday care packages and help homeless vets. the group is scrambling to make up the loss until it hears back from lucky and investigators if you would like more information on the lucky locations targeted or how to donate to the troops, check our website abc7 news and click on see it on tv. the u.s. coast guard has spent all night trying to contain an oil spill from a sinking ship. the tugboat used to sit high like the tug next to it yesterday morning the ship began to sink and leak oil into the water.

a man in a wheelchair. 40-year-old david gomez was crossing gomer street with his wife late saturday night when he was hit by a van at patrick avenue. the van driver stopped and is cooperating. 6:36 now. republican political action committee is about to launch a half million dollar cable tv ad campaign against president obama and his involvement with bankrupt solyndra. the fremont based solar panel maker filed for bankruptcy protection in september. a memo by the group cross roads gps indicates the three ads will hit president obama for what they call crony government spending in his administration's half billion dollar loan guarantees to solyndra. the group is associated with karl rove. the national parks service and the city of san francisco are locked in a disagreement over the role al -- alcatraz will play in the america's cup sailing race. the planning commission meets

. good morning. you are waking up to a few passing shower in the bay area. bulk of the rain in southern california with mountain snow and the southern sierra. highs today in the mid 50s giving way to some sunshine and we have a couple dry days on the way another opportunity for rain later on this week i'll talk about that later. 6:44. president obama welcomes iraqi prime minister al-maliki to the white house today to discuss the next phase of the relationship between the countries. the two have pledged to maintain strong ties after all u.s. troops leave iraq december 31st. it marks the end of a nearly nine year war deeply divisive in both the u.s. and iraq. serious questions remain about iraq's capability to stabilize its politics and security. the white house says mr. obama and al-maliki will discuss security, energy, commerce and education during today's meeting. this morning an american teenager is telling an incredible story of survival.

five months ago 14-year-old kevin lunsmann his mother and us sin were kidnapped by terrorist group abu sayyaf while on vacation. this weekend he managed to out-wit his captors and escape. the 14-year-old from virginia out witted his armed kidnappers telling them he was going to wash up in the stream. when they let him go he took off running and wandered into the jungle for two days before finding someone to help him. his mother was released in october after the family paid a ransom. his cousin escaped in november. s did say kevin is dehydrated and -- doctors say kevin is dehydrated has bumps and bruises, but should be fine. california bracing for budget cuts thursday the day the governor will announce his team's forecast for the next six months. if the state falls short of projected revenue would it trigger automatic cuts. if revenues are one billion dollars short, university

get the latest by going to abc7news.com/traffic. 6:52. the california department of insurance is trying to get the word out about california's low cost auto insurance program. starting today participant nose longer have to wait weeks to get their proof of insurance card. >> there is something on the order of 15% of the cars that you see on the road are uninsureed, close to four million -- californians it is a problem for them they run the risk of not having coverage a problem for us who have insurance when we run into someone that doesn't have the insurance we don't get the recovery we are entitled to. >> there are four eligibility requires: you must be at least 19, a driver in good standing for three years, drive a vehicle worthless than $20,000 and meet certain income requirements. now only 11,000 californians are enrolled in the program.

san francisco's health department is using a little toilet humor to warn travelers about the dangers of picking up diseases in developing countries. posters going up on muni buses showing pictures of porcelain lined holes in the ground used for toilets in third world countries the caption reads don't spend your vacation hugging this. reminder to make sure vaccinations are up-to-date if they are going to the developing wore. health officials say even people who grew up in places like central america, philippines and southeast asia may have lost their natural immunity to local diseases. an all day effort to shutdown the port of oakland and every other west coast port is underway. hundreds of protesters have managed to make an impact on trucks at the port. >> that's where amy hollyfield is live with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. it looks like it is shutdown out here. look at these trucks, they are just sitting, not going

anywhere. some drivers have turned their engines off, some have gotten out of their trucks standing on the street. they are trying to figure out what is going on. a spokesman for port of oakland says port is not shutdown that business is just delayed. out here on 7th street, nothing is moving. these trucks aren't going anywhere. by appearances it looks like business has been shutdown. protesters got here an hour ago stationed at a couple of locations we are on 7th street. they are -- they are on adeline as well they shutdown a street there. they mash ofed here starting at 5:third -- they marched here starting at 5:30 this morning with the goal to shutdown the port. now there are groups blocking at least a couple of entrances here at the port. even though they were asked by union leaders and the mayor of oakland and even some in the occupy movement, not to do this, they were told this

hurts the working-class. this is not the productive way to protest. but, these protesters say they are targeting the 1% who just get richer from the business that is done here at the port and said they were not deterred by the requests to not do this we did speak with a truck driver who is frustrated he says he won't get paid $250 he was expecting unless he makes his delivery at this point it is looking like not going to be able to do that any time soon. he's standing on the sidewalk trying to figure out what is going on. frustration among the truck drivers. the plan is to do this up and down the west coast from southern california up to alaska. here in oakland, the plan is underway. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. checking another top story. south bay's blue star moms say the troops have become the latest victims of the card theft scam at lucky

supermarkets. the group is scrambling to replace $3,000 stolen from its account. it is believed someone accessed the account after stealing the agency's debit card information from a compromised scanner at a lucky's self-check out.
